Once, the planet that became home to Vesra Nai was considered one of the Confederation’s great marvels of industrial progress. Beneath its surface, vast deposits of AF-49 had been discovered—a rare material essential for powering the plasma weapons of starships. Within only a few decades, the quiet frontier world was transformed beyond recognition. Cities rose, orbital ports filled with transports, research centers appeared, and enormous extraction complexes spread across the landscape. Money flowed freely, the population surged, and corporations promised that prosperity would last forever.
Vesra was part of that machine.
A gifted engineer and highly paid corporate specialist, she designed the systems that allowed AF-49 to be extracted faster, deeper, and more efficiently.
But one day, the deposits began to run dry.
First, the oldest mines were shut down. Then the spaceports emptied. Research centers were relocated to other planets, and the corporations dismantled everything of value before moving on in search of new deposits.
The machine of progress simply kept moving.
What it left behind was a scarred world with poisoned soil, shattered ecosystems, and cities built for millions that no longer had any purpose. To those making decisions somewhere among distant stars, the planet had become nothing more than a line in the records of a closed project.
To the people who remained, it was still home.
Vesra could have left with everyone else. Her experience, wealth, and connections would have allowed her to begin a new life on almost any developed world in the Confederation.
She had even planned to do exactly that—until she realized she could not abandon the people to face a catastrophe she herself had once helped create.
Abandoned factories replaced luxurious corporate facilities as her workshops. From the parts of old mining machines, she built water purifiers, generators, and agricultural systems. Instead of another promotion, she gained hundreds of people who came to her whenever the last life-support system failed or another settlement lost power.
Gradually, the wealthy engineer became the person entire communities depended on to survive.
It was there that she met Obi Ta’Va.
Arriving on the dying world, he saw yet another reflection of the sickness spreading through the Confederation. Too many spoke of a glorious future without noticing those whom that future had left behind.
At first, Vesra took the wandering monk for just another philosopher who would deliver a beautiful speech and leave on the first available ship.
But Obi stayed.
He worked beside the locals, listened to them, and helped wherever he could. Before long, the engineer and the monk realized that they had reached the same truth by different paths.
A great society cannot be built if its greatness exists only in places that remain profitable enough to notice.
Together, they helped the remaining inhabitants establish independent communities, restored vital infrastructure, and taught people how to maintain it without the support of corporations that had long since disappeared.
When Vesra became certain that her world no longer needed a single savior, she finally allowed herself to leave.
Several engineers, workers, and young volunteers went with her.
And so Vesra Nai became one of the first companions of the Seekers of Great Truths.
She set out among the stars not in pursuit of wealth—she had once possessed more than enough of it—and not out of vengeance against those who had abandoned her planet.
She wants to understand how to ensure that such a fate is never repeated.
For Vesra, the truth turned out to be surprisingly simple:
Progress means nothing if all it leaves behind are dead cities.
